Thrive at Work in Mining: A Sector-Wide Collaboration
In partnership with the Western Australian Government’s Mental Awareness, Respect and Safety (MARS) Program, the Future of Work Institute at Curtin University brought research expertise and practical frameworks to help the mining sector turn evidence into action.
Over three years (2022–2024), FOWI worked with leaders from 36 mining companies, suppliers, and contractors through the Thrive at Work in Mining Masterclass Series. More than 100 professionals collaborated to test ideas, share insights, and shape a suite of practical resources – toolkits and case studies – now freely available to support mentally healthy, safe, and respectful workplaces across the sector.

About the Masterclass Series
The Thrive at Work in Mining Masterclass Series was designed to help the sector move beyond fragmented or reactive wellbeing efforts toward approaches that are strategic, preventative, and embedded in everyday operations.
Guided by the Thrive at Work Framework, the program strengthened organisational capability in psychosocial risk management, good work design, and leadership for mental health and wellbeing.
Through a cohort-based, longitudinal format, participants took part in four interactive workshops and a final Capstone session, combining evidence-based content with practical tools, peer learning, and action planning.
The Series aimed to:
- Strengthened organisational literacy and strategy for psychosocial risk management.
- Supported cross-functional collaboration across HR, WHS, and wellbeing teams.
- Co-develop practical, scalable resources – the Thrive at Work in Mining Toolkits and Case Studies – now available for use across the sector.

A Thriving Community: Masterclass Series Alumn and the Community of Practice
The Thrive at Work in Mining Masterclass Series created a strong and ongoing network of professionals committed to improving mental health and wellbeing in the mining sector.
After completing the Masterclass Series, participants were invited to join an Community of Practice (CoP) – a structured forum for continued learning, peer exchange, and shared problem-solving.
Between 2023 and 2025, the CoP met eight times, bringing together alumni from across the sector to share progress, workshop challenges, and co-develop resources. Through this community, participants built on the momentum of the Masterclass, translating insights into action and supporting each other to sustain change within their organisations

“
Industry alignment and collaboration is wanted and needed. Good to see we are all on the journey together and experiencing similar journeys and hurdles.
